Director's Statement

Instituting positive change to the engineering contracting industry is an insurmountable task. Asking employees and customers to accept change is very challenging. This will not happen overnight. We must continually improve in the services we provide in order to meet the challenges of the open market economy, e-commerce and the changing demands of diverse customer base.

Our firm was one of the first providers of engineering services to have its internal Quality Management System (QMS) certified to the internationally recognized IS) 9002: 1994E quality standard, win the prestigious 1999 Prime Minister's Competitiveness Award in the category of services in 2000 and in October of the same year cop the Robert Montano Award for Excellence is services presented by south Trinidad Chamber of Industry and Commerce Inc. at its annual awards function. No small feat for a company of our size operating in the volatile, highly competitive, unforgiving and brutal construction sector. Continuing in its winning ways the firm in 2001, a mere four (4) months later found itself in the national spotlight once again when it won the 2000 Prime Minister's Competitiveness Award in the category of quality for construction materials. These levels of excellence are a clear indicator that the company is achieving the objectives set out in its strategic plan and the employees have embraced the ideals set out in the mission statement. This is another step towards attaining world-class status and the position of a premier supplier of mechanical engineering services.

Management is firm in its belief that recognition of excellence is a culmination of success factors rooted in its human resource development initiatives, constancy of purpose, strategic planning and continual improvement in productivity, efficiency, innovation, health and safety, environmental preservation/conservation and human capital at all levels of the organization.

Our success is hinged on the HRD policies instituted at the firm in the areas of motivation, communication, leadership and training in which we have already invested in excess of 3000 hours in the year 2000 with assistance from internal and external facilitators. Service providers in Trinidad and Tobago are now faced with intense global competition, demanding customers with rapidly changing desires, shrinking response times and demanding employees. Add e-commerce and the trend accelerates exponentially. At KEL we have recognized the value of information and through analysis our departmental managers are guided to make better decisions and dispel perceived organizational inefficiencies and status quo which will hamper our improvement efforts. If we are to maintain a leadership position in the market we must strive to become fast, flexible focused on customer competition, teamwork, time, strive to be process centered and re-engineering the organization and our strategic business plan re-thinking its assumptions in a process oriented way and utilize information technology. Our employees have recognized that our business goes beyond being a mere provider of new services, but is all about exceeding customers expectations, developing strategic alliances, adding value to customers businesses, professionalism, ethics, peak performance and the adoption of systems processes in our daily work activities. Each employee stress their commitment to process information oriented systems. Our process thinking must now be cross-functional and outcome oriented.

Planning  and working with systems for environmental preservation and conservation, health and safety, quality assurance/quality control, human resource development, codes and standards that govern products manufactured and installed, are the order of the day. This has impacted positively on the bottom line leading to reduced levels of spoilage, defective workmanship, mistakes an improvement in customer satisfaction and a return of employees taking a renewed pride in quality workmanship. The company must be continually re-inventing, re-engineering and re-discovering its products, processes, human resources and seeking ways to apply new technologies using innovative methods to have employees buy into and participate in developing new ideas.  Change is the only constant. we must all willingly embrace change, systems. knowledge, differences in people and challenges if we are to differentiate our products and services from the competition.
